The principle function of flight instructors is to accomplish safe, efficient, and student-satisfying flight training that complies with University policies and procedures and FAA regulations. All employees are expected to support CWU’s commitment to diversity and to bring and support inclusion into the university environment.

Job Duties

  • Meets with each student as published on schedule. Ensures that all individual flight lessons including ground instruction on aircraft systems, training maneuvers, procedures, and other flight related subjects; instrument training; preflight/post flight-debriefings and providing in-flight training to ensure students have a thorough understanding and comprehension of the training materials; and simulator training are completed according to the Training Course Outline specifications.
  • Ensures that all appropriate endorsements are made in the student’s flight book and personal logbook
  • Submits requests for stage checks upon completion of each stage of flight training with Chief Flight Instructor. Ensures that all flight lessons and flight books are completed before request for stage check
  • Ensures that all training activities, flights, and briefings are conducted in a timely fashion

- Ensures safety of flight training activities by routinely performing pre- and post-flight checks of aircraft

  • Meets with supervisors on a regular basis to evaluate student performance and progress
  • Participates in ongoing training to maintain proficiency and to increase instructing credentials
  • Assists in recruitment functions to attract new students to the aviation program
  • Other duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications

  • Associate degree

U.S. Commercial Pilot Certificate or ATP

  • Single Engine Land (indicate dates of first issue)
  • Instrument Airplane
  • Meet the recent flight experience requirements of 61.56 and 61.57 to carry passengers and hold the minimum required instrument experience listed in 61.57c or completed an instrument proficiency check within the last six months

Current Flight Instructor Certificate (CFI)

  • Airplane Single Engine (indicate dates of first issue)

FAA Medical Certificate

  • Current certification required (indicate date of current issue)
  • No restrictions that would prevent performance of flight duties assigned by CWU or performance of normal non-flying flight line activities

Other requirements

  • Finalists will be required to satisfactorily complete an evaluation/standardization check flight with CWU’s chief pilot
  • Applicants must provide an authorized release permitting CWU’s chief pilot to examine the applicant’s FAA Accident/Incident file
  • Demonstrated willingness and/or experience working with students and/or co-workers from a wide range of abilities, backgrounds, and experiences.

OR applicable combination of education and/or experience which demonstrates the ability to perform the essential functions of the position.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited institution
  • Certified Flight Instructor with Instrument Airplane (CFII)
  • Certified Flight Instructor with Multiengine (MEI)
  • Prior experience in the following aircraft: Piper Archer, Cessna Skyhawk, Piper Seminole, experience with Garmin avionics a plus.
  • Prior experience in turbo-prop or jet aircraft
  • Bilingual English/Spanish proficiency
  • Experience or interest in mentoring students from a variety of backgrounds
  • Potential to mentor and educate students who will serve diverse populations
  • Experience working with students from diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds
  • 500 hours of dual flight instruction given as a flight instructor or possess a Gold Seal CFI
  • 100 hours of flight time in the last 12 months
  • Willing to commit to a minimum of 18 months of employment at CWU

Pay, Benefits, & Work Schedule

Salary: up to $3,094.30 per month if a 40 hour work week is met. This will be disbursed twice monthly (semimonthly). If full-time (40 hour work week) is not attained due to variables such as weather, aircraft availability, etc., your semimonthly rate of pay will be reduced and will reflect the number of hours worked. This is an overtime eligible position; and you are eligible for overtime pay for hours worked in excess of 40 hours in a work week.

Working Conditions
: This position may work indoors and outdoors, at times in hot/cold/noisy/dirty/wet/confined areas such as aircraft cockpits, mechanical rooms, etc., and may need to physically access work areas with the equipment and tools necessary for completion of the job. This often requires standing/crawling/bending/walking/ climbing while carrying/pulling/pushing/lifting associated with equipment or tools. May need to drive a service vehicle in congested areas.
