United is currently looking for a Flight Test Captain based in Houston, TX.
Tests aircraft on the ground and flight to check operation and performance. Manages assigned duties and technology projects. Collateral duties may include Safety, Chief Test Pilot, Test Card Writer, Chronic Aircraft Program, Flight Test Database, Flight Test Operations Manual, Special Projects, ODA Coordinator, Flight Test Duty Manager and New Aircraft Acceptance Pilot. Ascertains that normal and emergency systems operate on major maintenance and factory accepted aircraft within acceptable tolerances as outlined in the specific United Airlines Flight Manual and Flight Test Manual. Provides a troubleshooting capability to Line Maintenance for peculiar or chronic aircraft problems. Flies all Non-Routine Flight Operations (NRFO) Group II missions requiring other than normal procedures. Flies Maintenance Ferry flights as assigned per existing regulations. Flies all test flights such as diagnostic, heavy maintenance or maintenance validation per existing regulations. Provides thorough write-ups and post-flight debriefing as appropriate. Performs related duties as assigned such as writing and revising Flight Test Procedures, performing qualitative and quantitative engineering flight tests on aircraft, evaluating systems on proposed projects and current aircraft, attending pilot training courses, and maintaining required proficiency level on each type of aircraft. Maintains all qualifications current such as medical, passport, visa’s and badging.
- Promotes Safety Management System policies and procedures and supports a Safety Culture within their area of responsibility
- Tests airplanes on the ground and in flight for proper operation and performance
- Manages assigned duties and projects
- Verifies normal and emergency systems operate on maintenance, overhauled and factory-accepted airplanes, as directed
- Provides troubleshooting to Technical Operations
- Flies all Group 2 Non-Revenue Flight Operations (NRFO) missions, Maintenance Ferry Flights and other flights as directed
- Provides write-ups and post-flight debriefings as appropriate
- Writes and revises Flight Test Procedures as assigned
- Evaluates systems on proposed projects and current airplanes
- Attends pilot training courses, as required, to maintain proficiency level on each type of airplane operated by United Airlines
- Maintains valid First Class medical, passport, visas and Identification (IDs) as required for United Airlines flight operations
- Attends Flight Standards meetings as directed to provide interface with the line operation
- Coordinates and interfaces with the Fleet Standards Managers as required
- Serves as Flight Test Duty Manager (FTDM) as required
Required skills
- Languages: English
- College graduate with Bachelor’s degree
- Airline Captain or Military or Flight Test leadership/management experience
- Flight Test or Functional Check Flight experience
- Airline Transport Pilot Certificate
- Current First Class Medical
- Current Passport
- Must be legally authorized to work in the United States for any employer without sponsorship
- Successful completion of interview required to meet job qualification
- Reliable, punctual attendance is an essential function of the position
Desired skills
- Graduate of a recognized Test Pilot School
- Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering or field closely associated with flight testing
- Airline, Flight Test, Training, Management and Leadership experience career combination
- Type ratings in aircraft owned and operated by United Airlines
- Recent flight test experience
- Solid work ethic
- Four years Flight Test experience
